Trey Benson from St Joseph High School was rated a 3-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Benson joined Oregon.
In 2021 as a freshman Benson saw action in just 2 games for the Ducks as he ran for only 22 yards on 6 attempts for only 3.7 yards per carry, with one TD, with no fumbles. As a receiver he made no receptions for no yards.
After the season Benson transferred to Florida State where as a sophomore in 2022 he played in 12 games. and rushed for 969 yards on 141 carries for an elite 6.9 ypc, with 9 TDs, with no fumbles. In the passing game he pulled in only 11 receptions for 109 yards.
SCOUTING REPORT: STRENGTHS
- Benson has very good vision and a knack for picking out cut-back lanes and then breaking offchunks of yardage.
- Cuts on a dime with lightning-fast feet and the quick-twitch explosion of an Olympic sprinter out of the block. Very good vision.
- Once Benson plants his foot, he’s explosive moving upfield, and his 0-to-60 acceleration is enough to catch defenses off-guard.
- His initial burst is excellent, and he’s capable of running out of a traditional setup or taking the ball lined up next to a quarterback in shotgun.
- He’s at his best working in space, showing the quickness and vision of a return specialist. His stop-start ability allows him to create initial separation.
- An excellent blocker on the outside, he also adds value in the running game.
- He often thrived in the screen game, transitioning upfield quickly and showing a knack for following his blocks. Benson has the size and strength to pass protect.
SCOUTING REPORT: WEAKNESSES
- Benson can sometimes be impatient, not allowing his blocks to set up, a nuance required for backs to last a decade-plus.
- He sometimes get too upright and fails to run behind his pads.
- Benson isn’t going to overwhelm opposing defensive backs with speed and athleticism.
